The First Beacon:

The Anna and Jacob Fine Social Services Center

Asking for help is often the hardest step our clients must take. The first stop for every new client is our Anna and Jacob Fine Social Services Center. A comprehensive intake interview determines the extent of the family’s need. ARK social workers counsel, advise, refer and coordinate the treatment. Programs range from food and shelter to school supplies and toys. We even have a barber shop! The following are highlights of a few of our many programs:

Food Pantry

Legal Clinic

Telecare

Sabbath Baskets

Referrals

Job Placement

Food Pantry

Our food pantry provides canned goods and other supplies to ARK clients. Click here for more information.

Legal Clinic

In our legal clinic, over 40 volunteer lawyers give their time and expertise to help ARK clients. The legal cases involve issues that challenge the poor, including landlord/tenant disputes, social security appeals, immigration and domestic relations.

The Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Telecare Program

Often, the isolation of those who have limited contact with the outside world can be overwhelming. Every morning at The ARK, volunteers call people to chat, to share, to befriend and to inspire. These calls have saved lives. If we get no answer, we call emergency numbers to send immediate help on the way.

Sabbath Baskets

Each week, volunteers deliver Sabbath baskets filled with food, Sabbath candles and other goodies to needy families. Often the volunteers establish caring relationships with these families, and the delivery becomes a warm, friendly visit.

Referrals

People in crisis are scared and confused. Often they have been to other agencies, but have been inhibited by the red tape and long lines. ARK case workers become their advocates, easing their way with other agencies—even accompanying them to appointments when necessary.

Job Placement

Our clients depend on the services we provide. But, most of all, they want to be able to help themselves. Therefore, The ARK has a job placement service and is in frequent contact with area businesses regarding any possible job openings.
